Building resilient communities can feel overwhelming. Across the world and right here at home in Hawaii, natural disasters are on the rise both in frequency and severity. Communities everywhere are vulnerable to the devastating impacts of these events, and despite the significant efforts of researchers, response organizations, and government agencies at every level, persistent gaps remain. From planning to execution, the response is often locked in silos, resulting in fragmented mitigation and disjointed recovery efforts when what is most needed is coordinated, collaborative, and effective action.
This reality is why Community Resilience Collective was created. We believe that disasters, and by extension our efforts to mitigate and respond to them, begin and end at the local level. Government and nongovernmental agencies can provide significant resources and expertise, but lasting resilience comes from residents, business owners, and community leaders who know the needs, the obstacles, and the opportunities for lasting defense against hazards and disasters. Our mission is to help bridge the gap between the need and the response by educating and empowering communities to lead disaster mitigation and preparedness initiatives, supported by government and nongovernmental partners and resources, in order to develop successful models for unified resilience strategies.
