Health & Mobility

Environmental Considerations

Sawyers face several routine environmental hazards that students should be fully aware of before committing to a class. Those hazards include:

extended work periods
direct sunlight & heat
difficult / sloped terrain
trip hazards
overhead hazards (widowmakers)
hidden obstacles

The ability to quickly egress from a potentially dangerous position is as critical to the sawyerʻs safety as the required PPE. Students with limited mobility or other health concerns should speak with our instructors before committing to a class.

Personal Protective Equipment

The dangers of chainsaw operations can be mitigated with proper protective equipment. While CRC cannot enforce nor be responsible for your personal decisions when it comes to PPE, we do require and enforce proper PPE when operating a chainsaw in any space where we our field support team is operating. This not only keeps you safe but helps keep our team safe, and builds trust between sawyers.

Some of the required PPE will be provided by CRC during the class, and some will need to be provided by you in order to participate. That breakdown is below (and will be re-iterated when we reach out directly to schedule a class with you):

Chaps (ANSI F1897-2020)
Blood Stop Kit
Scrench (compatible with our saws)
Basic safety glasses (Z87.1+) or over-the-glasses goggles (Z87.1+)
Earplugs
Safety Whistle

PPE To be provided by Student

Work Pants – fatigues, jeans, ripstop, hiking pants, etc. Sturdy. Consider lightweight or breathable materials, side-zippers for airflow, etc. Youʻll get hot under your chaps.

Work Gloves – style is your choice (leather, nitrile-dipped, etc.) but avoid gloves that are unnecessarily bulky.

Work Boots – steel toe, at least 6 in. height, consider steel-shank as well.

Special Note

Do not go out of your way to purchase a bunch of designer PPE before your class. Yes, some of that stuff looks pretty cool, but you don’t even know if you’ll enjoy saw work until after you spend some time getting covered in tree glitter. Save your money until you know you love it. As part of the class we go over PPE standards and some personal preference recommendations.
